Gatehouse Country Inn
Gracious hospitality in the heart of the PoconosBy Lisa Petrocelli - Publisher, Pennsylvania Vacation Guide
My husband and I had the pleasure of spending a recent weekend getaway at The Gatehouse Country Inn in the Poconos. Specifically, the inn is located in the historic town of Shawnee-on-Delaware, just steps from the banks of the Delaware River.
As a gift to my husband for his upcoming "significant" birthday, I wanted a quiet, low-key getaway without the kids where we could just enjoy some downtime and relax together. The Gatehouse Country Inn was a perfect choice. Upon our arrival Cindy, the inn's co-owner along with her husband Gordon, provided a tour and brief history of the inn before showing us to our room. We stayed in the Carriage Room which is a large, bright guest room with windows overlooking the courtyard and an iron balcony with a view of the inn's side yard (note: While the iron balcony looked charming and afforded great views of the inn's property, it was a bit rusted so we opted not to step out onto it). The inn offers two other guest rooms and a suite.
One of the reasons we decided to stay at The Gatehouse Country Inn (besides the favorable reviews we read) is its convenient location to The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort. As a surprise for my husband, I arranged a private golf lesson at the resort's Tillinghast Golf Academy and I wanted to take advantage of the some of the resort's amenities while he was busy with his lesson. The Gatehouse is definitely close to The Shawnee Resort, but due to some windy roads with no sidewalks, I would definitely recommend driving as opposed to walking to it.
One of our favorite things about our stay at The Gatehouse Country Inn was relaxing outside on the private flagstone courtyard. We visited on a gorgeous fall weekend and enjoyed sharing a bottle of wine while we munched on some fruit and cheese and soaked in the crisp fall air. The courtyard is situated next to the inn's historic ice house which has found a new life as an antique shop run by Cindy and filled with unique treasures.
Breakfast at The Gatehouse was quite good and consisted of vanilla yogurt with fresh fruit and an egg puff pastry dish along with our choice of coffee, tea and juice. It was certainly adequate to sustain us as we headed out for a few hours of hiking along the Delaware Water Gap.
Cindy is a great source of information about the local attractions and has maps, brochures and directions to just about any place in the Poconos. We were so glad we heeded her advice about our restaurant selection for dinner. She suggested Antelao's, which is a small BYOB restaurant locate about 10 minutes from the inn. The restaurant is only open Thursday-Sunday evenings for dinner and with a very small dining room, it fills up fast. We made our reservations over a month in advance and were so glad we did. Our meal was simply outstanding and we would return again in a heartbeat.
Overall, we were very pleased with our stay at The Gatehouse Country Inn. The location worked well for the activities we wanted to do (golf, hiking, etc.) and the personal service of the innkeepers was top notch.Learn more about the Gatehouse Country Inn
